About NCCAT
Recognizing that caring and
skilled faculties make the best schools, the North Carolina Center for the
Advancement of Teaching offers a full complement of professional development
activities, including residential seminars, teacher-scholar residencies,
and other programs. Established in 1985, the center offers more than ninety seminars each year for educators at the pre kindergarten through 12th grade levels who have been teaching full time in North Carolina for at least three years. The center is located in Jackson County in the state’s
southwestern mountains with a second campus located on Ocracoke Island.
NCCAT, is the first state-funded center of its kind in
the nation has brought national attention to North Carolina. A center of the University of North Carolina, education officials
from many states have visited to see its facilities and programs
in action. In 1995, United States leaders in government and education gathered
at NCCAT for a meeting of the National Commission on Teaching and America's
Future. NCCAT has been featured in the Education Life supplement of the New
York Times in
an article titled "Giving the Teacher Balm for Burnout" and on National
Public Radio.
