Google Hangout with Honored Educator Scholar

From NCCAT Faculty Member Dr. Ernest Johnson ...

Recently the teachers attending The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching program, Reaching Reluctant Readers: Bringing Boys to Books, participated in an exciting Google Hangout session with Kevin Vickers and his son Braden. Kevin Vickers is a School Library Media Coordinator at Sun Valley Elementary School. He recently received the Richard Schwartz 2015-16 Honored Educator Scholarship that was presented to him at NCCAT. Braden is in the 6th grade at Piedmont Middle School. He loves math and reading historical fiction. His favorite books are: Prisoner B-3087, The Locket, Warrior Cats. He just finished his first season of Cross County where he ran in the Union County Championship with 8th grade boys.

Kevin and Braden offered the teachers insights about how to get boys hooked on books. Most of the teachers were mesmerized by the presentation and had opinions that were aligned with Megan Eeiwert, “Seeing Braden talk about how he became a reader and his favorite books renewed my faith in the drive that boys have for reading. His passion for historical fiction is contagious.”

Thank you Kevin and Braden for providing our teachers with a meaningful and memorable experience.
