March Madness & Reading - A great combination

March Madness is coming up. Teams and fans across the country will be watching to see which squad comes out on top in this single-elimination College Basketball tournament that ends with a national champion.

We're glad to see a North Carolina school district using this time to promote reading. Rowan-Salisbury School district has a list of basketball themed reading ideas.

Some include ...

Basketball by Karen Durrie

Very easy text and photographs present some basic facts about basketball.

The Ultimate Guide to Pro Basketball Teams by Nate LeBoutillier
History, stats, records of professional basketball players and teams.

Hoop Genius by John Coy
Story of how basketball was invented.

J is for Jump Shot: A Basketball Alphabet by M. Ulmer
Basketball history, famous players, basketball vocbulary from A to Z

The Basket Counts by Matt Christopher
Mel Jensen is new to the Titans basketball team and two players don't like him because he is black.

Center Court Sting by Matt Christopher
Daren's tendency to blame everyone but himself when anything goes wrong causes problems with his best friend, with a young neighbor who idolizes him, and with one of his basketball teammates.

It is part of great contest going on at the school system. The Rowan-Salisbury School System will be reading like crazy during the month of March. All of our schools will participate in a reading competition set up with brackets similar to the NCAA. The media coordinator at each school will be the referee for the competition and will award points to homerooms and students.
