NCCAT asks for your help in work for NC teachers

John Griffin is a teacher in Newton-Conover County Schools and a great NCCAT alumnus. He recently sent this message as NCCAT Alumni State Co-Chair that we are sharing on our blog. Thank you to John and all our alumni for all they do for NCCAT and education in the state of North Carolina.

Like many alumni of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT), I have witnessed a number of changes in pre-K–12 education in my career. But no matter how many changes I face, I am very proud to share with my fellow teachers and alumni that my commitment to teaching, improving my abilities to engage my students to become lifelong learners, remains steadfast.

My own attendance to NCCAT, nine in all as a scholar, seminar and program participant, has helped me to pursue this goal as an eighth-grade language arts teacher in Newton-Conover City Schools. It seems I can trace every forward step that I have taken in my journey as a veteran teacher to the encouragement that I received from NCCAT’s supportive staff as I grew in the teaching profession. If you are NCCAT alumni, I am sure that your personal and professional development was heavily influenced by your time at NCCAT whether you studied best practices for motivating reluctant readers, the complexity of teaching children in poverty, or how to meet the instructional needs of all students.

As an Alumni State Co-Chair, I write to you today to ask you to join me in helping to ensure that today’s educators have the same opportunities that we had to receive the high-quality professional development that only NCCAT can provide, the kind that shapes lives and careers. Our investment in NCCAT not only can serve as a vital vote of confidence in the agency that was started from the idea of a teacher, but also reminds us of the importance of our chosen profession and one of the most challenging jobs on the planet - teaching.

If you have already given to NCCAT this year, thank you for your continuing support of teacher professional development in North Carolina. Your gift in support of NCCAT’s Annual Fund is unrestricted funding that helps support NCCAT’s overall mission.

Giving is easy and we are continuing our goal to “go green” this year. To make a tax deductible contribution to NCCAT’s Annual Fund through the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc, please go to - community.nccat.org/givenow - to make a secure gift through the online community, a great way to help save money.

This year in particular every contribution counts, our academic year goal is $30,000, and NCCAT’s needs are greater than ever. These are funds that can help NCCAT offset costs and free up monies for substitute teachers, instruction or educational supplies for its professional development seminars and programming.

If you prefer, donations are always accepted by mail or over the phone. Please make checks payable to: The Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc., 276 NCCAT Drive, Cullowhee, NC 28723, or call (828) 293-5202.

Remember to celebrate the genius in each and every one of your students, and in yourself!
