NCPDK educators connect at NCCAT

By Melissa Nixon, Director of Title I Guilford Public Schools

In early November, the North Carolina Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa’s first cohort of Emerging Leaders gathered together in Cullowhee for a time of reflection, growth and renewal. NCPDK recognized an opportunity where the organization could offer service to educators in North Carolina by coming to the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching.

Twenty of North Carolina’s top leaders spent a day and a half learning about change leadership from Derek McCoy, principal in Rowan County and an NASSP Digital Principal of the Year, social activism from Dr. Drinda Benge, a professor at NC State University, digital leadership from Steven Weber, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, and understanding diversity in our schools from Dr. Melissa Nixon, Director of Title I in Guilford County Schools and adjunct professor at High Point University.  A presentation by former NC Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Donna Peters, on how everything rises and falls on leadership was the keynote address of the event.

Participants not only left with a renewed professional self, but also with resources for continued growth and a new professional learning network with whom they are connecting.

NC Phi Delta Kappa hopes to offer this opportunity to a second cohort in the fall of 2016.  To learn more about NC Phi Delta Kappa please visit http://ncpdk.weebly.com/
