State Superintendent June Atkinson named president of Chief State School Officers

"NC State Superintendent June Atkinson was named president of the Council of Chief State School Officers on Friday during the Council’s 2014 Annual Policy Forum and Business Meeting in San Diego, Calif. Atkinson served as the Council’s president-elect over the past year.

Atkinson succeeds Kentucky Commissioner of Education Terry Holliday. Holliday also has a North Carolina connection having served as the Iredell-Statesville Schools’ Superintendent from 2002-2009 before moving to Kentucky.

Atkinson is the second North Carolina State Superintendent to lead the Council in recent years. State Superintendent Mike Ward served as president in 2002.

“Throughout my career, I have valued the leadership and support the Council provides to the nation’s public school leaders,” Atkinson said. “I am honored to serve as president and look forward to contributing at such an important time in the history of public schools.”
