NCCAT’s Beginning Teacher Program
One-third of the teachers in the United States leave the profession after three years and nearly half leave by the fifth year. To quell this loss of talent in North Carolina schools, NCCAT conducts professional development programming designed for our state’s beginning teachers.
NCCAT’s Beginning Teacher Program includes NCCAT Connections, a yearlong induction program for teachers from participating counties in their first year of teaching, and “Connect to Your Future: Celebrating Success in the Classroom,” a five-day, residential seminar for teachers in their second or third year of teaching. These seminars and programs are designed to reinforce essential skills for good teaching, strengthen instructional practices in the classroom, and build professional networks. The results are improved skill levels and effectiveness of new teachers and higher retention rates. Beginning teachers who have attended NCCAT programs in their first, second, or third year have a higher retention rate than that of the state or the nation.
