We're happy to see the work of Heather Roof, who teaches seventh-grade science at Chase Middle School in Forest City. Roof has been to NCCAT as a Kenan Fellow and took parf in our Seize the Data program.

She recently won a $5,000 grant from Facebook to help start a robotics program at her school. This program will help inspire young people and develop an early interest in robotics engineering and technology.

Many teachers who come to NCCAT for our beginning teacher programs share stories of how and why they went into education. Northern Guilford High School teacher Luke Barnes is glad after time in the business world he returned to what has been the family business.

Both Barnes mother and father were educators. When he graduated from Appalachian State in 2011 with a degree in Business Management and accepted a sales job, it appeared his direction would be different. But Luke realized teaching and coaching were his passions.

NCCAT alumnus and good friend Ben Owens, who is a Mathematics & Physics Teacher at Tri-County Early College High School in Murphy and a 2014 Hope Street Group National Teacher Fellow, passed along good news that there are 40 applications for the Hope Street Group North Carolina Teacher Voice Network. Good to hear!

One part of the state the could use more representation is Western North Carolina. We know with one campus in Cullowhee about all the great teachers in Western North Carolina and wanted to pass on information about this opportunity.
