Reading and Writing activity for the first week of school

Here is a quick idea for the first week of school from NCCAT faculty member Amy Jo Spencer.

Teacher friends...Idea for first week of school!!

A 2018 book entitled "Alma and How She Got Her Name" by Juana Martinez-Neal is a great book to use as a read aloud and do the writing activity "History of a Name" (Notebook Know How, by Aimee Buckner). The book also comes in Spanish. A great way to celebrate multicultural authors too! Juana Martinez-Neal is from Peru and how she got her name is in the link below. The video could also serve as a mentor text for the writing activity. You could even include the book "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes to compare Chrysanthemum to Alma.

The sky is the limit! Happy reading and writing!

NCCAT wishes you best of luck this next school year. Remember we are always here to help. Click here for our upcoming schedule.
