Bringing Boys to books program at NCCAT

REACHING RELUCTANT READERS: BRINGING BOYS TO BOOKS at the NCCAT Campus in Cullowhee The energy, enthusiasm, creativity and commitment in this group of North Carolina teachers was over the top. To quote several of the participants, “If all of us could be in the same school we could show the state how to solve the reading problems with our children.” We are thankful for the work these teachers are doing to discover ways to empower the literacy habits of young males throughout the state of North Carolina. Wishing each of you a successful year!

Using STEM to Enhance LIteracy

The world of STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math—provides a rich environment that motivates children to want to learn more. Children often prefer reading about spiders and dinosaurs to fictional characters. STEM activities help students build vocabulary, incorporate problem-solving skills, and analyze complex text with real-world applications. Teachers have joined us in Cullowhee for "Using STEM To Enhance Literacy."

Reopening Mary D. McDuffie Honored Educator Scholarship application

NCCAT is currently in the process of taking applications for the Mary D. McDuffie Honored Educator Scholarship (HES) for FY 2018-2019! Normally, applications are taken from January 1 thru April 30. However, we did not receive enough qualified applicants, so we are re-opening the application process through August 31, 2018. For this year, the benefactor prefers responses from exemplary career U.S. History teachers who are working in middle schools or high schools in Northampton, Cumberland, or Brunswick school districts. Applications will be accepted through August 31, 2018.

Teachers of NCCAT - Regina DeCristofaro Chatham Middle School Chatham County

Growing up in the 60s and 70s had its good points and bad. I remember summers where my mom would tell me to go out and play and be home before the streetlights came on at night. We would be gone all day, no cell phones, parents knew we were safe and we would play outside all day long. We did not have video games, we made up games to play with our friends and occupied ourselves. Those are the good memories.
