Beyond the Trail of Tears: A View from the Cherokee Homeland Application

Eligibility

K–12 teachers and other professional school personnel such as librarians, principals, and instructional coaches from both public and private schools are eligible to participate to this Institute. Parents who are teaching in a home school setting are eligible to apply, as are graduate students who are preparing to teach at the K-12 level (note: space is available in the Institute for up to three graduate students). Although the Institute content is relevant to many subject areas, the most natural correlation is with history, social studies, science and anthropology. Eligibility criteria are listed on the NEH website at http://www.neh.gov/files/divisions/education/eligibility/school_teacher…

Application Instructions

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MARCH 4, 2014

A completed application consists of the following items:

  • Application cover sheet; you will fill out a cover sheet for your application online at the NEH website
  • A résumé or short biography with contact information for two professional references; and
  • An application essay (no longer than four doubled-spaced pages).

You should submit a copy of the cover sheet, together with the rest of your application materials as email attachments to the project director at [email protected]. If for some reason you are unable to send the application electronically, please contact the director for information on mailing hard copies.

You are allowed to apply to up to TWO separate projects (seminars, institutes, and/or Landmarks workshops); however, you may participate in only ONE project per summer.

Note that filling out a cover sheet is not the same as applying, so there is no penalty for changing your mind and filling out a cover sheet for several projects. A full application consists of all of the items listed above, sent to the project director. Please send your completed application to the project director; do not send it to NEH.

The most important part of the application is the essay of no more than four double spaced pages. This essay should include your reasons for applying to the specific project; your relevant personal and academic information; your qualifications to do the work of the project and make a contribution to it; what you hope to accomplish; and the relation of the study to your teaching.
