NCCAT Remembers Jean Powell

Cullowhee, NC

CULLOWHEE—Jean Paul Powell, a distinguished educator who first proposed the idea of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017. She was 98.

A visitation will be held from 7–8 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2017, at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Scotia Village, 2200 Elm Street, Laurinburg. A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Clinton City Cemetery. The family will receive friends also after the service at the gravesite.

EdCampWNC Returns to NCCAT

Cullowhee, NC

CULLOWHEE—EdCampWNC returns to the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, a national leader in professional development, for a sixth time Saturday, August 26th.

EdCamps, which began in 2010, are not like a traditional conference with a set schedule determined months ahead of the event. This professional development model has an agenda that is created at the start of the event by the participants to fit their needs. Participants are encouraged to attend sessions that are best for them.

NCCAT Partners for Learning Event About Solar Eclipse

Cullowhee, NC

CULLOWHEE—Teachers took part in a program in April that equipped them with learning tools for hosting community events during the upcoming solar eclipse event. The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching’s “Total Solar Eclipse Training” program was a partnership with Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) at NCCAT, a recognized national leader for professional development programming for teachers.

NCCAT Alumna, Mountain Faith Band, and NFL Star Promote Literacy Programs

CULLOWHEE—Sandra McMahan has always felt a strong desire to teach and bring the joy of learning to others in any form possible.

“I taught stuffed animals as a child,” McMahan said with a smile. “Nothing drives or excites me more than to see how excited a little one gets when they write their first story or begin to read on their own. It’s a powerful motivation for me to find ways to encourage kids to not lose that excitement about learning.”

New Courses at NCCAT Online in April

CULLOWHEE—New Online courses are available starting April 1 from the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching.

NCCAT Online is freely available to all North Carolina licensed educators at no additional cost to you or your district. NCCAT Online Courses are short, self-paced modules where participants can earn 3, 5, or 10 contact hours, depending on the number of assignments participants are asked to complete.

Mitchell County Educators Examine Teacher Leadership with NCCAT

Ocracoke, NC

OCRACOKE—During a Teacher Leadership Institute program 12 members of a Mitchell County Schools team focused on creating more teacher leaders while at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, a nationally recognized leader in professional development.

The four-day program in Ocracoke allowed educators the chance to work on efforts to help teacher leadership in the Mitchell County district. The new offering is designed to respond to the needs of school districts.

NCCAT Offers Learning Opportunity Focused on Motivating Disengaged Students

Cullowhee, NC

CULLOWHEE—The complex, multi-faceted issue of student engagement will be addressed from April 18–21 during the program “Motivating Disengaged Students.” The professional development offering will be held at the Cullowhee campus of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, a recognized national leader in professional development programming for teachers.

“Motivating Disengaged Students” will cover classroom-specific techniques and motivational tactics that teachers may incorporate into their own customized classrooms.

Registration for NCCAT Solar Eclipse Program Closes Next Week

Cullowhee, NC

CULLOWHEE—The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT), a nationally recognized leader in professional development, will partner with Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) from April 10–13 to offer “Total Solar Eclipse Training” to K–6 educators from across the state.

Registration for this special opportunity with NCCAT will close next week.
