Canvas Training Opportunities Available from NCCAT

A group of seven Davidson County School educators made the most of the extra time to dive into the world of Canvas with the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, a national leader in professional development.

The group took part in a session with NCCAT faculty member Elizabeth Joyce in Cullowhee. The high school was working on a soft roll out of Canvas and wanted to go deeper. Canvas, North Carolina’s Learning Management System (LMS), is a one-stop learning and course management tool. A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of electronic educational technology (also called e-learning) courses or training programs.

“Canvas is a fabulous tool for educators,” Davidson County Instructional Technology Facilitator Leigh Hopkins said. “There are many layers, and it is not something you can learn in a day. It may take a couple of years to get good with Canvas. I feel like our first adopters coming here and being able to learn from Elizabeth, who has used it deeply, actually will accelerate our learning process.”

Hopkins said the beauty of Canvas is you can make it what you want or need it to be.

“With technology, you have all these digital tools, and now you can put it all together,” Hopkins said. “It centralizes everything. It can improve communication between teacher and student. You can provide verbal, video and written feedback. It extends teacher effectiveness.”
