Focus Friday on Math Held at NCCAT

CULLOWHEE—Teachers joined the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching for a daylong Focus Friday event about “Vertically Aligning the New K–8 NC Math Standards and Instructional Frameworks” on Sept. 28.

This one-day session at the Cullowhee campus provided opportunities for teachers to delve into the new NC math standards and instructional frameworks for successful teaching. Teachers learned strategies for conceptual understandings, and explore resources that aided in reaching the rigor of the standards. In addition, collaboration with math colleagues from across the region facilitated vertical alignment amongst grade spans. This professional development was designed for K–8 teachers and included an additional opportunity to meet virtually for follow-up learning and collaboration.

“It is exactly what I needed,” said Angie Martin of East Franklin Elementary in Macon County Schools. “The time to collaborate was very helpful. Whenever we are at school in our busy lives we don’t have this time to really get into a topic like we did today.”

Annie Joyner, of East Hanford Dole Elementary in Rowan-Salisbury, agreed.

“It helps to talk with out ideas and strategies with teachers from different districts,” Joyner said. “Hearing what they are working on and how they are doing it helps provide a fresh perspective to bring back to your classroom.”

The Focus Friday programs offer teachers the opportunity to look into a variety of topics while at NCCAT for a day. Visit www.nccat.org website for future Focus Friday topics coming up at NCCAT.
