NCCAT Receives ARC Grant to Support Teacher Leadership Institutes

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) awarded a grant for $95,782.00 to the Development Foundation of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Inc., to support Teacher Leadership Institute programs in 12 western North Carolina counties.

Understanding the power of teachers as leaders in supporting large-scale, systemic change, The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching is partnering with local school districts to provide professional development in Teacher Leadership to 220 educators to strengthen the ability of the K12 delivery system to prepare a ready workforce.

The four-day Institutes will be held on the NCCAT Cullowhee campus using the residential model. The ARC investment will be used to support the implementation of programming that upholds “Standard 1: Teachers Demonstrate Leadership” of the NC Professional Teaching Standards. Registration will be open to public school teachers and administrative leadership in each of the districts.

“We appreciate the support of the Appalachian Regional Commission that will make it possible to expand the Teacher Leadership Institute program for current and emerging teacher leaders from western North Carolina,” said NCCAT Executive Director M. Brock Womble. “We will be able to reach more educators who will reach more students in North Carolina classrooms.”

The NCCAT project was one of nearly 600 projects totaling more than $152 million funded during the fiscal year by the Appalachian Regional Commission.
