Teacher Spotlight: Fatima Sail of New Hanover County Highlights NCCAT’s Impact for Students

New Hanover County Schools teacher Fatima Sail is quick to share why the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) is a must for educators seeking meaningful professional development.

“NCCAT is a powerful reminder that an investment in teachers is an investment in students,” said Sail, a French teacher at Eugene Ashley High School. “I’m so grateful for the resources shared with us this week. We had excellent sessions that connected best practices with real-world strategies for the classroom. Teachers should come to NCCAT for the best professional development sessions in North Carolina.”

Sail, a former New Hanover County Schools Teacher of the Year, was named a Luz M. Frey NCCAT Honored Educator Scholar in 2022. Originally from Morocco, she faced significant challenges in her own education journey. Despite those hardships, she persevered — an experience that fuels her passion to make a lasting impact on students.

“I know the difference education has made in my life, and I’m passionate about creating that same opportunity for my students,” she said. “This week has helped with ideas and tactics to do that.”

Sail recently participated in the NCCAT program “Applying MTSS Best Practices in the Secondary Classroom” in Cullowhee.

“This was a great opportunity to network with other educators and learn and brainstorms practical ways to implement MTSS in secondary education. This week program provided us with tools on how to apply core intervention for all students, create plans for intensive intervention, collect data, and monitor students’ progress. I am so excited to share and unpack what I have learned about the MTSS framework with my school” she said.
