This program will dive into ways to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) into the NC PreK and Kindergarten classroom. Learn what STEAM looks like developmentally and discuss the importance of introducing it to young students. Explore hands-on STEAM lessons that can easily be integrated into standards, content domains and goals while keeping in mind program accreditation.
Explore disciplinary literacy and what it means to read, write, speak, listen and think critically within any content area. Through the use of online tools, such as online sticky notes, journal writing and mind maps, investigate literacy within the disciplines. These tools will assist your students in becoming more resourceful. Create new lessons or update current ones with digital tools that will make your lessons come to life and deepen your students’ knowledge of disciplinary literacy.

Expand your literacy tool kit with strategies for motivating young reluctant readers. In this program, we will explore three powerful motivations that drive student reading: (1) interest, (2) dedication, and (3) confidence. An interested student reads because they enjoy it; a dedicated student reads because they believe it is important, and a confident student reads because they can do it. This program will examine classroom-ready tips to get young readers interested and excited about reading. Learn the value of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in today's classroom and discover strategies for your literacy tool kit.
CULLOWHEE - The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) has added communication and collaborative tools for presenters and participants while they are on the Cullowhee campus.
