Honored Educator Scholarship winners honored at "Teaching the Holocaust" program

Gwen Austin, History teacher from Ocracoke School, and Joshua Gaskill, History teacher from Pamlico County High School, recently received Honored Educator Scholarships from NCCAT. Here's a bit about about both ...

Congratulations to Gwen Austin, History teacher from Ocracoke School, for being named the first recipient of the Mary D. McDuffie Honored Educator Scholarship. This scholarship honors the lifelong dedication of Dr. McDuffie to the profession of teaching and education. With a career spanning over 35 years, Mary’s educational achievements included Teacher of the Year at Terry Sanford High School; Cumberland County Principal of the Year; Wachovia Southeast Regional Principal of the Year; North Carolina Principal of the Year; and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the most prestigious awards presented by the office of the Governor of North Carolina. After serving as a North Carolina Superintendent, Dr. McDuffie also served as NCCAT’s Executive Director from 2002–2011. Dr. Mary D. McDuffie passed away in 2013.

Mrs. Austin attended the seminar, “Teaching the Holocaust: Resources and Reflections,” November 16 – 20 held at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC. This scholarship covered all costs associated with Mrs. Austin’s attendance in the seminar, including program materials, instruction, food, lodging, travel, substitute teacher reimbursement, as well as $250 for use in her classroom.

And about Joshua ...

Congratulations to Joshua Gaskill, History teacher from Pamlico County High School, for being named the George Brinson Honored Educator Scholar for 2014 – 2015! This scholarship at NCCAT honors the lifetime educational achievements of George Brinson – an outstanding advocate of public schools who used his energy, understanding of educational issues, and his connections with the community to champion education and serve as a strong voice for meeting the needs of all students.
