CULLOWHEE (November 5, 2012)—The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching Board of Trustees recently held their semi-annual board meeting in Cullowhee. Faculty and staff reported on the center’s activities. Earlier this year, two trustees were appointed to four-year terms by Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham). During the October board meeting, these new appointments were sworn in: Aaron Fleming of Apex and M. Brock Womble of Spruce Pine. Terms began July 1. Also, Gregory E. West of Fayetteville was elected vice chair.

Aaron L. Fleming Takes a Seat on NCCAT Board of Trustees
Earlier this year, Aaron L. Fleming of Apex was appointed to a four-year term by Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham). During the October 21 NCCAT Board of Trustees meeting, Fleming was sworn in by the Hon. Willis P. Whichard of Chapel Hill, NCCAT trustee. Fleming’s term began July 1.
“I am very pleased to welcome Aaron Fleming to the NCCAT Board of Trustees,” said Elaine Franklin, executive director of NCCAT. “He understands North Carolina education from many perspectives and is committed to being an active and engaged member of the board.”
NCCAT Boards Schedule Work Session
A joint work session of the board of trustees of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching and the board of directors of the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc. will be held from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, in Morrisville.
M. Brock Womble Takes a Seat on NCCAT Board of Trustees
Last fall, Dr. M. Brock Womble of Spruce Pine was appointed to a four-year term by Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham). During the NCCAT Board of Trustees meeting last October, Womble was sworn in by the Hon. Willis P. Whichard of Chapel Hill, NCCAT trustee. Womble’s term began July 1, 2012.
NCCAT Names Jonathan Wade as Director of Programming
The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching announces the selection of Dr. Jonathan D. Wade of Cullowhee as director of programming. He will report directly to NCCAT Executive Director Dr. M. Elaine Franklin.

A meeting of the board of trustees of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching will be held Sunday, April 21 at 8 a.m. in Ocracoke, followed by a joint meeting of the NCCAT board of trustees and the board of directors of the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc. at 1 p.m.

NCCAT Supporters Sign Change.org Petition
Thousands of concerned citizens (5,573 to be exact) from across that state, including teachers, administrators, education professionals, and friends of NCCAT, have signed a Change.org petition asking state legislators and Gov. McCrory to do one thing--fund NCCAT.

Richard L. Thompson Named Interim Executive Director of NCCAT
Dr. Elaine Franklin, executive director of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, recently announced that she will be leaving the center at the end of August to direct the Kenan Fellows Program for Curriculum and Leadership Development at NC State University. Franklin has been the executive director of NCCAT since April 2011. Franklin noted that NCCAT and the Kenan Fellows Program have worked closely for a number of years and she looks forward to growing that relationship.
Fletcher “Gene” McIntyre Takes a Seat on NCCAT Board of Trustees
Earlier this month, Fletcher “Gene” McIntyre of New London was appointed to a four-year term by Speaker of the House Thom Tillis (R-Cornelius). McIntyre’s term began July 1, 2013.
“We are very pleased to welcome Gene McIntyre to the NCCAT Board of Trustees,” said NCCAT Board Chair Greg West of Fayetteville.

A meeting of the board of trustees of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching will be held Sunday, October 20 at 8 a.m. in Cullowhee, followed by a joint meeting of the NCCAT board of trustees and the board of directors of the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc. at 1:15 p.m.
NCCAT Hosts Carolina Coding Initiative Events
Carolina Coding Initiative will be hosting a public launch of the series Dec. 9 at NCCAT in Cullowhee that is also sponsored by Southwestern Community College and Western Carolina University. The events will help Code.org’s goal of getting 10 million students of all ages to try programming for the first time this year. The initiative only seeks one hour of commitment from the learners over a one-week period. The classes are basic coding for beginners.
