CULLOWHEE – Two experienced educators have new roles at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, NCCAT Executive Director Dr. M. Brock Womble announced.

Congratulations to Kinsi King of South Iredell High School in Iredell-Statesville Schools on receiving the NCCAT Richard L. Thompson Honored Educator Scholarship.The scholarship provides travel and money to use in the classroom. NCCAT helps North Carolina teachers grow in knowledge, skills, compassion, and professionalism so that students become engaged, self-motivated, and successful.

Participants will be provided CTE middle grades strategies and resources that can be incorporated in lesson planning, instructional delivery, and student activities to introduce new information. Participants will have the opportunity to create lesson plans incorporating these new strategies and resources.

CULLOWHEE – Speaker of the House of Representatives Tim Moore has appointed two members to the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT), a recognized national leader in professional development programming for our state's teachers.

NCCAT is proud to announce scholarship awards for five outstanding teachers to attend a Holocaust Educator Seminar in Poland this summer.  The five scholarship recipients stood out from among 45 teachers who applied. They will be awarded these scholarships from the NCCAT Development Foundation’s Holocaust Endowment Fund. A decision about the trip will be made later as world events allow.

NCCAT was honored to host a group from Hayesville High School Monday March 7th.

Join NCCAT in April for program "It’s Time: Empowering Problem-Solvers" in Cullowhee. Now more than ever, it is time to empower our math learners with strategies that honor students’ strengths and propel problem-solving forward. In this session, we will discuss student-centered practices that move learning beyond simply finding the “correct answer.” We will learn strategies for problem-solving instructional routines as well as protocols to facilitate tasks in the math classroom. Authentic problem-solving needs engagement, supports, and encouragement.

To promote reading fluency, incorporate repeated reads focusing on decoding, then phrasing, and lastly reading smoothly with expression. Dr. Jan Hasbrouck discusses reading fluency here and shares that the foundation of fluency is accuracy. NCCAT Early Grades Literacy Specialist Gin Hodge shares this tip.

Fluency is not simply memorization, rather it is about growing understanding through strategies.

Exciting program going on at NCCAT Ocracoke now - "Creating and Fostering the Entrepreneurial Spirit." What is an entrepreneur? How do Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Business, Finance, and Marketing teachers help students explore connecting their creative interests to entrepreneurship? We will learn about career opportunities in a small tourist town and talk to business owners to learn how their entrepreneurial spirit launched their businesses. We will connect how learning local environments plays an important role in a successful business.
