Exciting program going on at NCCAT Ocracoke now - "Creating and Fostering the Entrepreneurial Spirit." What is an entrepreneur? How do Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Business, Finance, and Marketing teachers help students explore connecting their creative interests to entrepreneurship? We will learn about career opportunities in a small tourist town and talk to business owners to learn how their entrepreneurial spirit launched their businesses. We will connect how learning local environments plays an important role in a successful business.

There is a clear science to teaching reading. Due to advancements in cognitive science, we know more about how our students learn to read than ever before. Please join us as we spend a day looking closely into best instructional practices that support the Science of Reading.

We had so many special moments during the NCCAT 2022 Prudential NC Beginning Teacher of the Year Week, including this one. 2022 finalists Brooke Bentley of Wilkes County Schools had been to NCCAT even before she was born.

CULLOWHEE – Xavier Adams, an Orange County High School teacher in Orange County Schools, was named the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) 2022 Prudential NC Beginning Teacher of the Year in a special ceremony at the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center on the campus of Western Carolina University Thursday, February 17, 2022.

Exciting to have teachers from across North Carolina with us for Math Badge 1: Math Core Instruction Models in Cullowhee today. Math Badge 2: Strategies for Conceptual Teaching and Building Number Sense will take place tomorrow. NCCAT is holding a four-session series exploring best practices for K-5 math instruction. The instructional components shared in this series lead to strong classroom structures that embrace mathematical thinking and honor students’ instructional needs. Thank you to these teachers for being with us.

North Carolina continues to lead the nation with National Board-certified teachers and the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) is happy to help teachers achieving this goal that impacts state students with a quality teacher in their classrooms.

Participants will delve into current Science of Reading research to support learning around the essential components of reading instruction. Our work will include discovering the tenets of structured literacy to ensure all children have access to effective reading instruction. Please join us as we spend quality time looking closely into best instructional practices that support the Science of Reading. This program is intended for classroom teachers in the kindergarten through the fifth-grade classroom.

The sessions general last around an hour. NCCAT helps North Carolina teachers grow in knowledge, skills, compassion, and professionalism so that students become engaged, self-motivated, and successful. NCCAT works to support teachers and impact students. April programs are: Embracing Math Vocabulary and Meta Cognitive Strategies.

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The North Carolina Center of Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) Board of Trustees will convene a virtual meeting on Thursday, February 3^rd, 2022, at 4:00pm.  The Board will meet to discuss the 2021-2022 budget and related matters.  The Board will conduct a closed session for confidential matters.

Congratulations to Paige Hart of Rodgers Elementary School in the Martin County Schools NC district on receiving the NCCAT Eugene and Jean Rogers Honored Educator Scholarship. It allows the Martin County Teacher of the Year to attend an NCCAT program of his or her choice. The scholarship covers all costs associated with your participation in an NCCAT program including: instruction; food and lodging on the NCCAT campus; program materials; travel to and from the campus from the teacher’s home and payment for the substitute teacher while they attend NCCAT.

Applications for 2022 are now being accepted. Please complete your application by April 30, 2022. Honored Educator Scholarships (HES) provide an opportunity for selected teachers to attend an NCCAT seminar of their choice. An HES covers all costs associated with participation in a five-day NCCAT seminar, including program materials, instruction, food, lodging, transportation, and substitute teacher.  The honored educator also receives $250 for use in the classroom.

NCCAT will hold a six-session series focused on a research-to-practice exploration of the foundational skills in early literacy starting January 28th. Effective instruction in these fundamental components holds the key to life-long learning for every child in your classroom. Attend all six and earn an NCCAT literacy badge or attend individual sessions to deepen your own understanding of the building blocks of beginning reading.
