PROGRAM CONTRACTS
CULLOWHEE—The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching strives to meet the current and future needs of North Carolina teachers. As a result, our two new faculty members will lead math and STEM professional learning. Senior Math Specialist Dr. Bonnie Bolado will support teachers incorporating math standards and digital learning into their instruction and Senior STEM Innovator Darcy Grimes will provide hands-on STEM lessons to help teachers prepare students for an ever-changing world.
CULLOWHEE—Kara Ball, an alumna of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, has been selected as one of the four finalists for the the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) National Teacher of the Year.
Ball, a 4/5 grade teacher at DeLalio Elementary School teaches science, technology, engineering and math. She attended the program “Catching Up With Your Students: Digital Learning” at NCCAT in 2015. She is the 2018 Department of Defense Education Activity Teacher of the Year.
Congratulations to Kelly Crowley of Pine Valley Elementary on being named the 2015 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Educator of the Year by Corning and Wilmington Business Development.

I am teaching Earth/Environmental Science this semester, both Honors and Academic. Part of the Standard Course of Study for this subject is a focus on storms, including hurricanes. I am using experiences and data regarding North Carolina hurricanes that I learned from the NCCAT seminar as part of my lessons. Also, I am using pictures taken on Portsmouth Island/Ocracoke Island to highlight the unique challenges of living on a barrier island during storms.
NCCAT is following protocols and taking COVID-19 safety precautions while teachers return to Cullowhee and Ocracoke for professional development.
Designing Your Own STEM Curriculum: PBL/CBLS in Action in Cullowhee and MTSS Best Practices: Secondary in Cullowhee took place recently.

NCCAT has identified and targeted professional development priorities for North Carolina educators. We solicited and listened to district curriculum leaders and teachers while incorporating state legislation and licensure updates when determining our programming this year.
Summer 2020 Adventures in Biotechnology High School Lab program applications have opened. At Biogen’s Adventures in Biotechnology students will conduct a hands-on lab project, meet and interact with scientists and biotech professionals, and get an inside view of a biotech company!

NCCAT enjoyed the opportunity to recognize Natalia Mejia, a teacher at CC Griffin STEM Middle School in Cabarrus County Schools, and the NCCAT 2023 Empower NC Beginning Teacher of the Year at a recent Cabarrus County Schools Board of Education meeting. NCCAT Executive Director Dr. M. Brock Womble and Deputy Executive Director Dr. Karen Sumner presented Ms. Mejia with the BTOY award. Thank you to all who were present including the principal at Ms. Mejia's school Dr. Yolanda Blakeney.

Mariah Morris, a second-grade teacher at West Pine Elementary School in Pinehurst, has been named the 2019 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year. Morris has attended professional development programs at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement, a recognized national leader in professional development for teachers.
