NCCAT was pleased to host North Carolina educators in Ocracoke for the "STEM Schools of Distinction" program. During this planning institute schools reviewed the overarching principles of the NC STEM Schools of Distinction Rubric, considered what each principle means in the context of their individual school, assess the school’s readiness, drafted a strategic plan and developed next steps for school improvement or to apply for the NC STEM Schools of Distinction. The institute included whole group discussion to learn from best practices across the state and individual school team planning. Those who were encouraged to attend were: School teams of three to five (including a required administrator). Schools which currently have a STEM focus or have previously applied for the STEM School of Distinction designation will benefit the most from this institute.

CULLOWHEE - Take the indoor classroom outside and bring STEM to life. Using various tools such as GooseChase, Geocaching, iNaturalist, and others, learn to use the “outside” as your main STEM tool.
The world of STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math—provides a rich environment that motivates children to want to learn more. Children often prefer reading about spiders and dinosaurs to fictional characters. STEM activities help students build vocabulary, incorporate problem-solving skills, and analyze complex text with real-world applications.
Coming to NCCAT in November - "Supporting the N.C. Portrait of a Graduate Competencies in the STEM Classroom." The North Carolina Portrait of a Graduate Initiative calls for students to not only acquire rigorous academic content, but also durable skills that will serve them as they enter the career or college of their choice. The Portrait of a Graduate Competencies include adaptability, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, empathy, learner’s mindset, and personal responsibility. Each of these skills are necessary components of high-quality STEM education! Participants in this seminar will experience the Portrait of a Graduate Competencies within the context of STEM and will walk away with tangible strategies that can be quickly implemented in the STEM classroom!

CULLOWHEE—The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching has added “Technology Tools To Enhance STEM” to the list of offerings at the Cullowhee campus.
The program, with course number 14359, will be held March 27–30 at NCCAT, a nationally recognized leader in professional development.
CULLOWHEE—The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation awarded a grant of $30,006 to the Development Foundation of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Inc., to support professional development programming in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for North Carolina teachers during the fiscal year 2017–2018.
Join us at NCCAT Ocracoke later this month for "Supporting the N.C. Portrait of a Graduate Competencies in the STEM Classroom" in January. The Portrait ensures that North Carolina students are well equipped for the broadest range of postsecondary opportunities, be it college, career, or military. The Portrait shows that student academic success matters, but so does a student’s ability to adapt, to collaborate, to communicate, to think critically, to show empathy, to learn, and to take personal responsibility.
Educators from across Western North Carolina came together on June 13th at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) in Cullowhee for a powerful day of professional development, collaboration, and innovation in elementary STEM and science education. A dynamic event focused on exploring what excellent collaboration in elementary science and STEM can look like.
Adding to the constant effort of striving to meet North Carolina’s current and future needs in STEM education, The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching has hired Senior STEM Specialist Dr. Jennifer Redfearn to support teachers in incorporating STEM learning into their instruction. Wonderful group with us for "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: An Integration of literacy, STEM, and more!" in Ocracoke. When 14 year-old William s home in Malawi experienced a terrible drought, his family was left with nothing to eat or sell. Without food or the ability to go to school, William explored his town s library. With perseverance and grit, he came up with an idea that would change the lives of his family and town forever.
