Educators have meaningful week while attending STEM Schools of Distinction program at NCCAT Ocracoke
NCCAT was pleased to host North Carolina educators in Ocracoke for the "STEM Schools of Distinction" program. During this planning institute schools reviewed the overarching principles of the NC STEM Schools of Distinction Rubric, considered what each principle means in the context of their individual school, assess the school’s readiness, drafted a strategic plan and developed next steps for school improvement or to apply for the NC STEM Schools of Distinction. The institute included whole group discussion to learn from best practices across the state and individual school team planning. Those who were encouraged to attend were: School teams of three to five (including a required administrator). Schools which currently have a STEM focus or have previously applied for the STEM School of Distinction designation will benefit the most from this institute.

Coming to NCCAT in November - "Supporting the N.C. Portrait of a Graduate Competencies in the STEM Classroom." The North Carolina Portrait of a Graduate Initiative calls for students to not only acquire rigorous academic content, but also durable skills that will serve them as they enter the career or college of their choice. The Portrait of a Graduate Competencies include adaptability, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, empathy, learner’s mindset, and personal responsibility. Each of these skills are necessary components of high-quality STEM education! Participants in this seminar will experience the Portrait of a Graduate Competencies within the context of STEM and will walk away with tangible strategies that can be quickly implemented in the STEM classroom!

CULLOWHEE—The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching has added “Technology Tools To Enhance STEM” to the list of offerings at the Cullowhee campus.
The program, with course number 14359, will be held March 27–30 at NCCAT, a nationally recognized leader in professional development.
CULLOWHEE—The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation awarded a grant of $30,006 to the Development Foundation of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Inc., to support professional development programming in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for North Carolina teachers during the fiscal year 2017–2018.
Make plans to join NCCAT for three exciting STEM Professional Development programs in April and June. NCCAT's instructional programs reflect the broad range of unique professional development topics for public school teachers and other educators. Adding to the constant effort of striving to meet North Carolina’s current and future needs in STEM education, The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching has hired Senior STEM Specialist Dr. Jennifer Redfearn to support teachers in incorporating STEM learning into their instruction. NCCAT, a recognized national leader in professional development programming for teachers, responded to an expressed statewide need for professional development in STEM education.

Wonderful group with us for "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: An Integration of literacy, STEM, and more!" in Ocracoke. When 14 year-old William s home in Malawi experienced a terrible drought, his family was left with nothing to eat or sell. Without food or the ability to go to school, William explored his town s library. With perseverance and grit, he came up with an idea that would change the lives of his family and town forever.

North Carolina Center for Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) Senior STEM Specialist Dr. Jennifer Redfearn is a recipient of the North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center Outstanding Instructional Leaders Award in Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education. This esteemed award recognizes and honors her outstanding contributions as an instructional leader to systemically improve performance in STEM Education as a means of providing all children with the necessary knowledge and skills to have successful careers, be good citizens, and advance the economy. The award will be presented at the NC SMT Annual Celebration on April 26 in Cary, NC.
